I’m walking in the park across from my dad’s house right after sundown. It’s still bright enough to see but night is falling fast. I’m on the other side of these large bushes in the park, which block the view of my dad’s house. Between the bushes I find a circle of bones on the ground. I poke at them, trying to determine whether their bird or human. I run back to my dad’s house before it gets to dark.
Now snow covers the ground. It’s mid winter. Dad is getting ready to go on a snow hike trip with some other men and their kids in the driveway. The kids include two girls and a boy. The boy’s dad is a real hard ass, wearing lots of layers and snow shoes. I’m going to go along with them on this trip, but I’m going to stay with the kids in a cabin while the men go all the way to their destination. Apparently the boy’s dad doesn’t think I’ll even make it to the cabin. He says I’m not worthy nor experienced enough to join them, and he’s pissed I was invited in the first place. “This trip isn’t some vacation. It’s not a game.” [End]
