I am a little girl on a road trip with my mom and dad. We’re in the motor home. My parents sit in the front seats while I sit in the glass bed/pool that is on the roof- where the over-head bed would normally be in a motor-home. There is a glass ceiling above me, so I can see the night city lights pass as we drive between the huge sky-scrapers. On some of the buildings I can see balconies extending off the rooms, glass pools similar to the one I’m in. Most are occupied by drunk girls in bikinis. I mutter to myself that I would be more conscious of the world around me. Those girls don’t seem to notice anything despite being so on display- where if I were in a pool on a building like that I would look at the city- the cars. Not long after I voice this a girl in her twenties sees me. She waves, and I wave back.
Then we are parked for the night. I’m making the bed for my parents, which was under the pool I was in on the ride. As I adjust the brown towel that will act as their pillow, I wonder how two full-grown people plan to sleep in such a small, cramped space. The bed is lifted up into a glass dome that will make sleeping very difficult. I suddenly become claustrophobic of the tiny space, and am eternally grateful when they lower the bed from the glass dome and let me out. My parents are now Adam and Eve from Only Lovers Left Alive. Different than real life: My parents have been separated for three years, the motor-home we used to own is long since been sold, the motor-home didn’t have a glass pool bed thing, I’ve never seen (in person) skyscrapers with pools extending out of them, it’s been a long while since I’ve been in a city that large, I actually haven’t seen Only Lovers Left Alive.
