I'm at a St. Patrick's gathering with my family and some other people I don't know. We're in a basement room, lit by a severely yellow bulb. Everything has a saturated glow because of it. Two guys, as a surprise, pull out a St. Patrick's day banner from a large bowl of popcorn. They were supposed to be able to just stretch it out and shout "Happy St. Patrick's day!" but the banner gets tangled and it takes them a minute. Despite this everyone is clapping excitedly, particularly my friend Ami. She gets up on a table and jumps up and down with joy, clapping them on. Her jumping takes her to close to the edge of the table, and she crashes to the ground, landing right on her rear. She quickly stands, looking close to tears. I am the first to ask, "Are you okay?" She looks around at everyone, and I'm still not sure if she's going to cry. "I'm fine," she says in a small voice. She's embarrassed, not hurt I realize. She pushes through, trying to get to the hallway. Everyone is trying to stop her, tell her that it's not a problem and that she doesn't need to be embarrassed, but she doesn't stop. I look around at everyone, trying to decide what to do. I decide to follow her.
She went all the way to a messy custodial closet, lit with a yellow even worse than the previous room. She stands behind a washer near some copper piles. I avoid stepping on cleaning bottles and buckets as I walk over to her in the tiny space. "You sure you're okay?" I ask her. She nods. "I've done stuff like that. It's so damn embarrassing, I hate it," I try to comfort her. She grins, feeling better. Ami is no longer Ami at all. She is now Nyght. "What's that noise?" he asks me. There's clanking and sawing coming from not far away. "Construction. They were working on the room we were just in, but since we needed it today they started on the bedroom up here." We are on the second level. Nyght's little sister comes into the closet to make sure he's okay. Me and him realize how this must look, both of us alone in a closet. Nyght doesn't want his little sister there. It feels like she's interrupting. In a mirror behind Nyght, reflecting back through a hole in the wall, I see the bed in the bedroom the construction people are working on. To break the awkward silence between us three, I laugh out loud. "What is it?" he asks me. "My Pokemon sheets," I say with a wide smile. "Come on, I'll show you." I squeeze through the closet, and get to the sunlight lit, clean bedroom. A few construction people remain, carrying out wood and tools. One of them tells me and Nyght no funny business while he's gone. We roll our eyes. I sit down on the corner of the bed, Nyght sits next to the pillows and his little sister sits on the other bottom corner. "See?" I say. "This used to be my Pokemon blanket." The comforter I am showing, the one we are all sitting on, is light blue and printed with all the Pokemon characters. "I was such a nerd, look, I even had matching sheets and pillows." I show them the sheets, the pillows, all light blue and all printed uniquely with the characters from the show. I feel slightly embarrassed, but it feels good to tell them this without feeling ashamed or judged. Nyght laughs at me and lays back. I lay next to him, my hand up by my head. He touches my fingers. We look at each other with matched eyes. We smile, and warmly hold hands. [End]
