Shaking and nervous, I entered the hospital room. I had been called there because my Grandfather had died about ten minutes earlier. I had never yet experienced the death of a loved one, and I didn't know what to expect. I knew that I had to go in though; I had to face it.
My Grandfather and I were always very close. I was his only granddaughter, so when I found out that he had suffered a massive stroke days before, I felt compelled to take the two hour flight to see him one last time. I had spent several hours with him in the hospital the night before.
When I saw his body, a lump caught in my throat. I don't know what I had been expecting, but I hadn't anticipated how strange it is to see a dead body. The face that I had known and loved was the same as ever, but there was no mistaking the missing life energy. Still, I kept expecting his chest to suddenly rise and fall again.
I held his hand briefly; it was still warm.
Taking a seat near the window, I scanned the skyline, and noticed a beautiful bald eagle sitting on the telephone pole outside. I pointed it out to my dad, and he said that it he had noticed it there shortly after my Grandfather had passed. I've never been one to believe in reincarnation, but I couldn't help but feel that the eagle was a creature which perfectly suited my Grandfather's proud, passionate, and clever spirit.
The eagle stayed outside on the telephone pole as the northern rain poured down, like the tears streaming silently down my cheeks. It remained for the whole time I stayed in the hospital room with my family and my Grandfather. Whether it was meaningful or insignificant, it gave me comfort to imagine my dear Grandfather as this eagle. I imagined his spirit soaring over the evergreen trees and mist of the land that he loved, taking fish from the rivers and harbors where he made his living as a fisherman, watching over his family with his keen eyes.
Rest in peace, Grandpa. I'll love you forever.
