When I was very young, maybe 10 years old, I had this dream that scared me so deeply, it stayed with me for the next 17 years.
At the time, I was sleeping on the top bunk of my bunk beds...with my two younger brothers sleeping below, and my mom down the hall in her bed.
I woke up and opened my eyes to see this very dark creature laying in my bed next to me, staring deeply in my eyes. It's face was about 2 inches from mine.
I tried to get up and run, but my body was completely unresponsive. All I could do was scream at the top of my lungs. I heard my mom running down the very short hallway, one step at a time, in super slow motion. It took her at least 45 seconds to run at top speed what would normally take 10 at a near crawl.
She finally made it to my bed, and grabbed me up and ran me back to her room and shut the door. She laid down with me in her bed and I instantly knew I was safe...
Many years later, I meet another person who has had very similar experiences, and told of many others with the same one...I started looking around the internet, and found references to "Old Hag Syndrome", which basically describes the same event...They call it old hag because it feels like there is this heavy body sitting on your chest, so you cant move, and this scary lady looks deep in your eyes. Others describe it as sleep paralysis, but have various different types of experiences during their episodes.
