A Smile Shall Set You Free

Nolan and I, along with 1 or 2 friends, walk down a concrete path surrounded by an incredible stretch of rocky landscape resembling Arizona. Mesas rise before us in the distance; golden brown and orange strata buried beneath a sharp sky of blue. We soak in the air and sunshine will working slowly down the path, content in our silence. In our hands are pieces of cactus the size of watermelons. The skin of the cactus has been sliced away leaving behind the gentle green flesh on which we feast. This is a day for unity and discovery.

A group of young children arrive, accompanied by a teacher. We realize at once that they too are here to enjoy the magnificence of this place and day. Not wanting to find ourselves in a chaotic situation, we turn left, away from the children, but are greeted by a locked gate. For a second I feel the thought of claustrophobia press against me like my own numb hand. "We've determined our boundaries. Freedom is lost". Turning back, I meet the eyes of a young boy and he smiles at me. I smile back. We're going to be OK. Freedom is never lost.
