Stayed up all night working as a patient sitter in the hospital. It is usually pretty easy money since i do it overnight from 11-7, they usually sleep. I find it to be fascinating. Each case is unique, and you never know what is going to happen. Since my job is to observe and alert nursing staff if needed I have a window into all these weird altered states of consciousness.
Well, after doing this I've noticed similar hand gestures that patients perform when asleep or in twilight states. A common one is like they are undoing braids or separating strings or hair. Last night the patient I was with was doing this, and was sitting up in a wheelchair conscious enough for me to ask him what he had. He told me it was popcorn and asked me to pick up a bag off the ground, I did, and handed it to him. I asked him if it was good and he said, "supposed to be".
It is frightening and awe inspiring to see a mind play such tricks on itself. That guy for all he knew was enjoying some popcorn that didn't exist for anyone but him. Observing his experience forces me to acknowledge that i am in the same boat. With minds that can trick us in this way we could all be me in a coma.
Anyway I stayed up all night. The one big rule is that I don't fall asleep. Got home around 7:30AM and slept until 2pm. I dreamt about downhill skateboarding and a whole bunch of other stuff that I could not recall after I got up. Maybe I need to sleep with a pen and pad. Yeah I will try that tonight.
