What's Up With Atheism?

If atheists are so sure that there is no god, why do they bother spending so much time trying to prove it? If one is still trying to prove that there is no god, then scientifically that means one has doubt, which leaves room for the possibility of the existence of god, in which case it would be foolish to be an atheist because you would then be NOT believing in something that's possibly there. And of course, academically it is not accepted that anything can be proven, only deemed more likely than not to a certain margin of error - less than 5% in academia and less than 1% in science and medicine.

I'm quite clear (unto myself) that "god" is a mythological, paradigmatic symbol or archetype for a reality around consciousness, but I still feel like asking you the question. There are answers to this from other people online and I'd love to hear your version.

I apply the same question to the mission of telling christians that they're delusional. While their literal belief in mythology is basically childish (literally and not directly meant as an insult), outside of the conscious political agendas enforced by religious institutions, the journey within around facing the unknown with a crutch they call faith seems like a necessary step in the evolution of consciousness. In The Red Book, Jung's Philemon gave the christians empathy saying that he wouldn't dare take away their loving god while they still have it to comfort themselves through this life.

From what I've read in Jung's explanation of archetypes, the myths are significant symbols that we use to communicate with our unconscious mind which is also the infinitely expansive, collective unconscious reservoir. Such models as the christ allegory and the buddha allegory are useful in the exploration of the self. One being about suffering and sacrifice, the other being about discarding suffering and pleasure (as you know).

Religion and belief is an inflation of the purpose of these processes, but in our self exploration and individuation, we create our own myth (a dialogue with the unconscious) and a new religion (our own personalized, differentiated path) that is unto our individuality alone and not a community effect. The religious are not ready for this and so they gather together and comfort each other with stories. But people like us have the freedom to face the deepest darkest places of ourselves and put our energy into discovering what we really are and what we are becoming.
