i had this great idea to fly heather to hawaii for a private yoga workshop, and as i'm telling her about it we get so exited that we fly into the air and arrive, magically, at the house she suggested we stay at in maui. there was something eerie and alive about the land, where there was this stack of rocks nearby the house that looked like giant granite oyster mushrooms, on the verge of flaking off each other and tumbling into the pond below. there was a concrete platform on the pond, and the some sort of life size rice paper and bamboo model of the house that was almost built there, standing all fragile. heather was explaining the story of why they didn't build the house on the platform, because of the precarious oyster mushroom rocks, and as she's telling me the story the rocks crumble in real time along with the story, and the paper house collapses. so we dip our feet into the lagoon, which is covered on all sides and surfaces by strange coral, some like little orange bubbles, some like pink spiny fingers- all kinds of coral, and we hesitate getting in because we don't want to step on the coral and kill it. so we just jump in, and the water is tepid and black and glossy, we can't see the bottom, and i get terrified of all the beings living in there that i cant see, so i try to get out and have to step on all this coral and it pops under my feet as it dies. then we go into the actual house, which is a giant square with a loft that goes around the parameter to make a second floor, and the floor is all these wooden puzzle pieces interlocking to hold itself together. we fall asleep on the second floor, and when i awake right at the first light of day and look out the window i see the ground is covered in snow. all the jungle trees too: covered in snow. i look down and see one set of giant footprints in the snow- the barefoot, sasquatch footprints. i'm amazed and curious and scared but not really, because i go outside and stand in the center of the giant footprint, i am smaller than one of its toes, and it has six toes, and i run back upstairs and tell heather she has to take a picture of me in the footprint so people will know whats really there. and we're looking for the camera and as we do the sun starts to emerge, from the center of sasquatch foot print, like a portal in the center of its foot where the arch would be. and i had been thinking that the giant was jumping from place to to place, which was why i only saw one set of footprints, but when i saw the sun in the center i realized that the giant traveled through the footprint, and that it was a portal to the center of the earth for galactic travel. so i ran back downstairs to jump into the footprint, and as i stepped in the center the light melted it, and i awoke. ...
Within the general symbolism of landscape, forests occupy a notable
place, and are often found in myths, legends and folktales. Forest-symbolism is
complex, but it is connected at all levels with the symbolism of the female principle or of the Great Mother. The forest is the place where vegetable life thrives
and luxuriates, free from any control or cultivation. And since its foliage obscures
the light of the sun, it is therefore regarded as opposed to the sun’s power and as
a symbol of the earth. In Druid mythology, the forest was given to the sun in
marriage (49). Since the female principle is identified with the unconscious in

children’s tales symbolize the perilous aspects of the unconscious, that is, its
tendency to devour or obscure the reason (31). Zimmer stresses that, in contrast
with the city, the house and cultivated land, which are all safe areas, the forest
harbours all kinds of dangers and demons, enemies and diseases (60). This is why forests were among the first places in nature to be dedicated to the cult of the
gods, and why propitiatory offerings were suspended from trees (the tree being,
in this case, the equivalent of a sacrificial stake) (8).

The deepest and most ancient meaning of the myth of the giant alludes
to the supposed existence of an immense, primordial being, by whose sacrifice
creation was brought forth. This cosmogonic myth was very common among
primitive and ancient peoples, and it shows how rites involving the sacrifice of
humans are an attempt to revive the initial sacrifice and to resuscitate the cosmic
forces or to reawaken, at least, their favourable proclivities (17). Now, the giant
is, in himself, neither good nor bad, but merely a quantitative amplification of the
ordinary; hence, as the case may be, there are some legendary giants who are
protectors and others who are aggressive. This sense of the giant as ‘that which
surpasses’ human stature (here symbolic of power and strength), is also indicative of the broad significance of the giant. He may be an image of the ‘Terrible
Father’, arising from childhood memories—children see their parents as giants—
or an image of the unconscious, the ‘dark side’ of the personality menacing the
Jungian Selbst (21), etc. It is interesting to note that in folklore the giant is tutelar
in character: he is usually the defender of the common people against the overlord, upholding their liberties and rights. Without generalizing, one implication of
the giant may be said to be the personification of collective Man—as implied in
the maxim ‘united we stand’—or of the life of a community (16). But the general
myth of the giant is far from being confined to this specialized meaning. In nearly
all symbolic traditions, he tends to appear as an outcropping of the marvellous
and the terrible, even though he always has a certain quality of the inferior or the
subordinate about him. The Bible refers to Goliath and to Og, king of Bashan at
the time of the exodus (46). Samson has certain characteristics of the giant. In the
West, Bodo, Rübezahl, Geryon, Gargantua and Hercules are the most significant
in gigantomachy; in Greek tradition, there are the Titans and the Cyclops. Christian tradition has often seen Satan as a giant (50). The tragic hero is intimately
linked with the giant, although, at times, in inverse relation as his adversary (60).
Frazer describes the numerous cases in which giant figures in wood or wickerwork were set fire to during midsummer festivals, comparable with the Valencian
fallas (or bonfires). The ancients would fill these figures with animals and even
live men, who were burnt with the effigy. They were considered as representatives of the spirit of vegetation, or of the god sacrificed to the world—which
brings us back once again to our cosmogonic interpretation. The giant may be a
symbol of ‘everlasting rebellion’, of the forces of dissatisfaction which grow
within Man and determine his history and his destiny; it may, that is to say, be a
symbol of the Universal Man (Adam Kadmon, 21). Now, according to Jungian 119 GOG AND MAGOG
psychology, the giant’s essence—or his appearance, rather—seems to correspond to the father-symbol, representing the spirit that withstands the instincts,
or as the guardian of the treasure (that is, the mother—the unconscious), in which
case it is identical with the dragon-symbol. Reviewing all this, Jung quotes the
example of Humbaba, the guardian of the garden of Ishtar in the Gilgamesh epic
(31).
