I was standing in the bakery at my day job in a grocery store (which is your typical vast, windowless, warehouse style grocery store) when a co-worker reminded me that she was setting aside a container of ridiculously oversized, star shaped sprinkles for me. As she set them on the table she said that it would be a better idea to keep them in the break room because keeping them in the bakery is clearly unsanitary. At that, I picked them up off of the counter and started to the break room which was newly relocated inside of an aisle between the snack sized pretzels and the candy bars (kind of like platform 9 3/4).
As I walked towards it, the lighting in the store subtley changed from the warm ambience of a flourescent tube to a cooler, more natural light but before I could take much notice, I was distracted by seeing two of my old friends from high school who I haven't seen in a long time. In passing, I said 'Hi' to one, who looked back and smiled, but was too nervous to say anything to the other (thinking back to certain past events). After thinking back to it, I was eventually eased by the fact that she didn't seem to notice me. As I turned the corner to the snack aisle, completely engulfed in my thoughts, the distant walls in behind me began to thin.
Just before I could enter the break room to set down the sprinkles, my friend who I was too nervous to talk to stopped me to say something that seemed pretty important to her but before she could say anything, the final pieces of the fractured space fell apart as a huge cargo ship broke into the space. We were now standing outside in a clearing in the woods facing a grassy embankment that was being overtaken by the ship. Water started to flood the grass up to our ankles and we fled to the only sturdy looking thing around: a cinder block shed. She tried to convince me that it would be safe, and, despite my skeptical outlook on the situation, I decided to go along with it and closed the door behind us. After a couple seconds of silence, I heard the first, small wave of water break against the shed. .
And I never saw my sprinkles again.
