Standing in my yard in the forest under a tree watching huge thunderheads build in the sky. They gradually become massive and puffy, moving across the sky in my direction. Instead of merging and floating they beginning to fall... g l i d i n g gently out of the sky at an angle toward me. I exclaim; "the clouds are falling from the sky!" I grab a branch near me and brace for their impact. As they land around me I am suddenly weightless, flying through the soft, billowing masses. Once they've all reached the ground I sink and land in the pile of huge fluffy clouds. They are soft, soft and look like whipped snow or mashed potatoes so I take a handful and eat it. It tastes like the purest, freshest cream, whipped and crystallized. Like coconut bliss...cold, smooth, creamy and light. I eat another handful then look over and see my Grandpa. I walk to him and feed him some cloud. He smiles and says it tastes like fat and we laugh- delighted and amused. Then we put an arm around each other and dance giddy through the clouds, prancing and laughing.
There are two principal aspects to cloud-symbolism: on the one
hand they are related to the symbolism of mist, signifying the intermediate world
between the formal and the non-formal; and on the other hand they are associated
with the ‘Upper Waters’—the realm of the antique Neptune. The former aspect
of the cloud is symbolic of forms as phenomena and appearance, always in a state
of metamorphosis, which obscure the immutable quality of higher truth (37). The
second aspect of clouds reveals their family connexion with fertility-symbolism
and their analogous relationship with all that is destined to bring fecundity. Hence
the fact that ancient Christian symbolism interprets the cloud as synonymous
with the prophet, since prophecies are an occult source of fertilization, celestial in origin (46). Hence also the conclusion of Bachelard that the cloud should be
taken as a symbolic messenger (3).
