Escaping the Waves...

We were on a beach. There were lots of other people on the beach. I was watching waves coming in to shore and I realized they were getting bigger. Dan and I were in his Scion and a huge wall of water came towards us. I told him to drive but it was too late. The kitties were in the car with us. I wanted to let them out, so they could run to safety, but I realized they wouldn't run fast enough. As the wave came up to the beach, it pushed the car back towards the embankment. It was forceful but slow and not out of control. Then as the wave surged in, it picked up the car and threatened to turn us upside down. I was crushed in the car with only a small space to breathe. I told Dan to breathe slow and not to panic. (I realize now that I was tangled in the blankets as I slept this morning. I wonder if this could have had an effect on that feeling of being smothered.) As the wave abated, we were un-crushed and deposited back on the beach. There were more waves coming in, each looking bigger than the last. I told Dan to gun it. We drove down the beach, but the sandy embankment was so steep I wasn't sure we could get up it. The next wave was coming fast, we had to try. He tore up the sandy slope and almost didn't make it, except that by then the wave had come in and sort of pushed us up that last little lip onto the dry land.
At that point we were no longer in a car, but standing at the edge of the embankment, waiting for the next wave. Jaxob and Jezebel were with us. As the next wave approached, Jaxob was still down on the beach, as were a whole lot of other people. They didn't seem bothered by the waves. Their beach chairs were anchored in, so they were just letting themselves get inundated.
I looked far out to a point where the land met the water and I could see the scale of devastation. This was most certainly a tsunami. But I hadn't felt an earthquake. I tried to figure out how we could look up the USGS website, so we could figure out where the earthquake had started and how big it had been.
The next wave was closing in fast and Jaxob wasn't going to make it up to us. At first I was scared, then I watched him get a firm, bracing grip on a metal railing and I sat with Dan and Jezebel to make a magic circle of protection. It must have worked because the wave washed over Jaxob and only barely splashed any of us three.
