High School Visit to a Lava Flow...

I am in Hawaii on a high school class trip. We are camping on a jungly slope. The trail down is overgrown and precarious. There are many activities where we're staying. It's kind of touristy, but in a really different way. One of the main draws is a rope swing that takes you down the whole mountain. It's really dangerous and looks like an enormous amount of fun. But we aren't allowed to do it. Other people are, and every now and again they come zipping by us. There are also little soapbox cars that you can rent. There's a burmed trail all the way down the slope and car is an easy and fun way to get down. I have hiked most of my gear in. It's strange though, because where I'm camped, there are layers of boxes and giant tupperware containers with my stuff in them. I didn't bring all this stuff on this trip, so it feels like I've been here before. At the bottom, there's a sort of central meeting spot where we gather together for lessons or school or whatever. At this point in the dream, though, we've graduated school and we're now having to pack up to leave. Down at the bottom, I can see teachers etc… cleaning up the common area. They're even shampooing the carpet. As I head up the slope, I pass my schoolmates, packing to leave. Some of them I've had some fun times with on this trip and I'm sad to have to part with them. There are lots of cute boys who I've been too shy to talk with. There are also many friends from actual high school who whisper stories to their friends about me as I pass by. Stories such as when I did or said something that haunts me still. But in this dream, I'm confident and feel good about myself so I keep walking on, minding my own business.
When I reach my pile of stuff, I'm sorting and packing. The practical stuff is easy and sort of vanishes when I have it taken care of. But down in the layers of mess, at the jungle floor, there are broken boxes of old stuff I'd forgotten about. Some of it seems important, like papers and drawings that meant a lot to me. I find my old i-pod but it's broken in half and won't work anymore. I'm uncertain what to do with all these things. Do I leave them here to be reclaimed by the jungle or do I try and pack them to take with me?
Then I'm distracted by a small, furry creature who has been perched right by my camp. I know I'm not supposed to touch or feed the animals, but I've seen this critter sitting here for almost the whole dream. He's perched on a ledge, so I hike up above him and walk down. As I approach, I notice two things. One - the animal (bird or monkey?) has split into two and is now the colorful creature I'd seen before, and also a black and white version of itself, bounding around and being crazy. I realize it's best not to disturb it. I also notice that the jungle patrol (the police of the area) are making routine rounds to make sure that people haven't been disturbing the wildlife. I don't like authority and I haven't done anything wrong, so I decide that I really want to get out of here before they reach me.
As I continue up the slope, I see that people are eating and I realize how hungry I am. I am joined by a couple of cool people - a guy and a girl - as I approach a trailhead that goes out to an exposed lava flow. We all decide that we should check it out while we're here. We start down the trail and the first thing we come to is a food stand that's selling corn on the cob and popcorn shrimp that's been cooked with the heat of the lava. It's tantalizing, but I want to keep walking. And I'm pretty sure I don't have any money anyway. A little further down the trail, we pause for photos. There is a serene lake that looks suspiciously man made and the view down into the valley below is spectacular. From here, a companion points out that she can see the glow of the lava reflecting on a grotto of jungle above. It takes me a moment, but then I pick it out. As we hike closer, we see all sorts of informative signs and interesting scenes. We cross a wooden bridge at one point and we're crossing over a place where molten lava randomly extrudes from the rocks below. As we're crossing, this happens. It comes out as a twisting, liquid red snake that soon cools to a dark black as it slides down the slope to join the larger mound of cool lava far below. Over the bridge, we find the main attraction, but it's so touristy, it's kind of a joke. There is a family of people sitting in a roped-off are, enjoying a meal of food that they're cooking over an open lava vent. There is a giant aquarium, wherein underwater cows defy physics and swim in super-heated water. There's some other stuff but I'm bored and I'm really nervous being this close to an open lava vent. I feel like the mountain could blow up at any time. I don't like being this close to danger. On the way back out, I consider the corn and shrimp once more, but I want to keep up with my companions, so I pass. As we approach the top of the trail, I realize how crowded and busy this place it. We pass several more high schoolers whom I knew and I say hi, only to hear whispered remarks of how I used to act strange, or used to have a crush on so and so.
Reaching the top, I am waiting for friends who were short behind me. Out of boredom, and after realizing my shoes make a sharp tap on the floorboards, I start to tap dance. I realize I'm actually pretty good. I have to not try though. As long as I just hop a little and flail my feet, they do a nice job. If I try to make a specific rhythm, it all falls apart. I tap for a while until my friends arrive. Then the dream is over.
