Went to a Tool concert with Adam and Zak. It was a lovely, small theater, ornate in every detail and the crowd was mellow and forgiving. I had general admission tickets so when they opened the doors, I was among the first in. I made my way into the theater, amidst a relaxed flow of fellow music appreciators. No one was rushing or pushing, and as a result, I was able to get a spot right up front, where I would be able to see all the action - most importantly a good view of Maynard himself.
My friends found me and while we were waiting for the show to start, we cuddled together. This was very strange because it was Zac... but the feeling was nice of hanging out with a softened, sweeter Zac. Apparently people were taking drugs but I wasn't offered any, so I didn't pursue it.
The theater filled up rather quickly and before long the music was starting. It was King Crimson and I got excited when I saw the 12 string bass. They played a song or two and I just enjoyed cuddling on the floor. Everyone was seated and the crowd was super chill. Then Maynard came out to sing on one of the songs. He was in costume from an earlier era - head shaved, body painted two-tone blue. He had a Devo hat that was a strobe light/black light, making him scintillating and surreal. As he sang, he stepped out into the crowd and walked behind where I was sitting. At the apex of the song, I threw my hand in the air. He was looking right at me and grabbed my hand. I made prayer hands around his, as a way of saying "Thank You" and he acknowledged me. He walked a little more, then came back to me and stood right over me, looking into my eyes. He was glowing white/blue and I was smiling ear to ear, completely mesmerized by his gaze. He returned to the stage but as the song ended there were technical difficulties. The music was really quiet and though the audience was respectfully whispering amongst themselves, a few of us shouted for more volume. Maynard left the stage and there was a break in the music while they fixed the bug.
I was so blown away that he had singled me out and acknowledged me that I fell backward, tumbling into a backwards sommersault and then another. When I righted myself, I was slightly embarrassed, but then got back up to find my seat again. Just as I sat back down, there was a general announcement in the theater for one other patron and myself - called forth by name - to meet in the hallway lobby to the right of the stage.
I walked out with this other person and we were met by Maynard, who had a little time before Tool went on. he asked if we wanted to join him for a snack and a chat.
We sat at a petit table in the lobby, and immediately Maynard started asking me a bunch of questions. I was blown away but able to totally keep my cool like it was nothing. After a few questions, I volleyed one of my own - "How do you know my name?" I asked him. "I have my ways." He responded. It became apparent that Maynard didn't really care about the other dude, he just had him tag along so it didn't seem so obvious that he really just wanted to talk with me. The other guy seemed pretty indifferent and quickly fell into the background.
Maynard offered me some snacks, laid out on a silver platter. There were little apricot tart squares and berry tart bites. I jokingly asked if there was LSD on them and he picked one up specifically and fed it to me. I was flattered that he got my joke and that I was so at ease with him. I never felt nervous, and in fact, felt as if he respected me as much as I repect him. I eventually decided that he would get bored asking questions about me, so I asked him about his tattoos. he revealed that he was nearly covered and began showing me his legs, chest, and back. He'd been working with an artist for many years to complete a strange body-suit of sorts that was unlike anything I'd seen in tattooing. I was impressed and it was fun to turn the topic to something that I'm able to talk intelligently and in depth about.
King Crimson was finishing up and some fans were pouring out of the theater for autographs. Maynard signed one, but then refocused his attention on me. My fingers and some of my hair were coated in jelly from the snacks, so I asked if there were somewhere I could clean up. He took me backstage to a kitchen that was his home kitchen. I assured him I'd go easy on his paper towels and carefully took one, wetted in, and then began to clean the jelly from my hair.
As I looked around the kitchen, noticing the idiosynchrosies of someone's personal space, I noticed Maynard looking at me. He had a fondness in his gaze that made me blush. Without saying a word, I knew he was attracted to me and seemed to be inviting me to take our connection to a physical plane. In the back of my mind, I was weighing the cost/benefit, remembering that I'd told Daniel a long time ago that if I ever met Maynard, Dan couldn't be mad if I slept with him. He agreed to this, but now that the situation was at hand, I was feeling conflicted - which I think is adorable because Dan confessed the other day, after waking from a potentially sexy dream, that he couldn't go through with it because he didn't want to dishonor our relationship. Cute.
I woke from the dream shortly thereafter, feeling rejuvenated, refreshed, and above all, validated to my core that Maynard - one of my heroes - would want to pull me from a crowd of hundreds, to share teacakes with.
