The first thing I remember in the dream was being in a land vehicle with a huge interior cabin filled with people - maybe 20 seats wide and 30 seats long. All the decor in the cabin was bright orange.
I looked out the front window - we were several stories up in the air. This thing was huge. There was some sort of tiny police vehicle with flashing lights providing an escort by swerving widely in front of us in a large oscillating path. We were apparently going upstream in traffic, because the site of this huge thing and the police vehicle swerving was causing all kinds of cars and trucks to careen off the road and crash in order to try to clear the path and avoid us.
I climbed up out of the cabin and finally saw what the vehicle was. It was a gigantic, mechanical insectoid - all metal, also all orange. The thing was moving on 6 (8?), gigantic, independently-articulated legs. Each leg was being operated by a human in a little crow's nest with levers - like some sort of elliptical trainer designed to translate natural walking movement into the operation of one (or 2?) of the legs way below. Though operated by multiple individuals, the thing moved with the grace of an organic being. I assumed one of the leg-operating positions, and the thing kept "walking."
We were walking over chasms and debris and wrecked cars without feeling a single thing. This land ship was both crudely mechanical and utterly brilliant in design.
Mysteriously, all of a sudden, the ride was over, and we *docked* into this elaborate metal structure designed to provide narrow pathways for humans to access the cabins and the leg-operator positions. It looked like a cross between a messed-up roller coaster and an upside-down octopus with arms like the meter-thick "cables" used to hold up suspension bridges - each of these with the two, thin, hand-hold cables above them so people could walk up these tentacle-like walkways. I got off and made my way down one of these paths past the new people clamoring to get on.
The next thing I remember: I'm on foot, walking along the street. Inexplicably, I was in a shambling crowd of sombre, dour-faced men (grizzled like weathered fishermen) - all silent - interspersed with grey, walrus-penguin-type creatures with long, hooked beaks - walking upright, the same height as the men and also silent.
In the center of this crowd was being pulled some sort of totem, blue with rings and symmetrical carvings. It was about 20 feet high and tilted forward at an angle with guy wires holding it to the moveable base it was on.
The crowd proceeded through the woods on a dirt road and finally stopped at some sort of large grocery store (or butcher shop?) - the only store - the only structure - of its kind around.
I then saw that there was some sort of a subspecies of the grey walrus-penguins - a smaller (3 feet long) thing that wriggled on the ground somehow - with jagged teeth but undeveloped beaks. They might have been an earlier growth stage of the same species.
I saw a line of these littler things squirming into the store/place. One of them was actually taking a bite out of the one in front of it - feeding on it. There was a huge gaping wound in that one, but it didn't seem to notice. It might've been that they were all feeding on the thing in front of them while squirming inside this place.
That was enough for me - I decided to bail. I backed out of the "parking lot." The men were standing and staring at the place in ritual silence, almost comatose and they didn't seem to notice me leaving. When I got to the edge of the crowd I saw a little ravine with some of these smaller creatures diving into it (perhaps also to escape), but I didn't think it was a good idea to dive into some unknown ravine.
At that point I realized I was lost.
