I am walking along a grassy island in a river, along with my mum (84). The river starts rising. The waters is flowing between our feet. Soon the fierce current proves too strong for the little old lady so I pick her up in my arms like a child and head for some massive boulders, the nearest high ground...
Later, in a hotel lobby there is a tall glass wall, behind which the river is tumbling down as a waterfall. Very impressive. I sit in an armchair, entranced at the might of the river and the sheer volume of water pouring over the lip.
Then I seem to be travelling internationally. I leave behind a major island and fly northeast across a strait, landing in a small city in Australia. It's as if I had left Tasmania behind and had flown into Melbourne, but in the dreamtime it was named Perth. The town was expensive. I found a manageress who showed me to a humble hotel room for the night and I took it.
Then I was flirting over dinner with a sexy young sheila I had met. The restaurant was the tiny bottom floor of a home. There was nothing else in the desert landscape besides this house. As the sun went down, the feeling between the two of us was getting hot and heavy. I was aware of the existence of my real life girlfriend, and yet for some unlikely reason that didn't seem to bother me at all.
Finally, my ex Heather was putting on a whimsical Burning Man flavored helmet, replete with tiny multicolored flashing lights all over it....
An ambivalent symbol since it corresponds to the creative power both
of nature and of time. On the one hand it signifies fertility and the progressive
irrigation of the soil; and on the other hand it stands for the irreversible passage of
time and, in consequence, for a sense of loss and oblivion (8, 60).

Water sustains life and is the most abundant compound in all living things. It may represent the flow of your energies, the path of your life, or the passage of time. It also may be symbolic of your emotional happiness. Examine the details of your dream. Is the water clear or murky? Is it rapid, turbulent, or stagnant? Are you just floating along its currents or actively controlling your movements? Consider these factors and see how they can be associated with daily life.
It has a profound and clear-cut symbolism. Berthelot observes that
the Biblical prophets, in order to counter the agrarian religions based on fertility
rites (related, according to Eliade, to orgies), never ceased to describe theirs as the
purest religion of the Israelites ‘when they were in the wilderness’. This confirms
the specific symbolism of the desert as the most propitious place for divine
revelation, for which reason it has been said that ‘monotheism is the religion of
the desert’ (7). This is because the desert, in so far as it is in a way a negative
landscape, is the ‘realm of abstraction’ located outside the sphere of existence
(37), susceptible only to things transcendent. Furthermore, the desert is the
domain of the sun, not as the creator of energy upon earth but as pure, celestial
radiance, blinding in its manifestation. Again: if water is associated with the ideas
of birth and physical fertility, it is also opposed to the concept of the everlasting
spirit; and, indeed, moisture has always been regarded as a symbol of moral
corruption. On the other hand, burning drought is the climate par excellence of
pure, ascetic spirituality—of the consuming of the body for the salvation of the
soul. Tradition provides further corroboration of this symbolism: for the Hebrews, captivity in Egypt was a life held in opprobium, and to go out into the
desert was ‘to go out from Egypt’ (48). Finally, let us point to the emblematic relationship of the desert with the lion, which is a sun-symbol, verifying what we
have said about the solar symbolism of the desert.

At times a desert in a dream symbolises the unconscious and represents the dreamer's sense of separation from it. Deserts are generally barren with little vegetation or animal life. The desert in your dreams could be bringing up issues of stagnation and periods of little growth in your life. Also, the desert could represent your loneliness and feelings of isolation. However, if you live close to the desert or love the desert, this may be a positive symbol. For some the desert may be a place where they can commune with nature and feel a sense of peace.

A complex symbol embracing several different meanings. According to
Jung, the island is the refuge from the menacing assault of the ‘sea’ of the unconscious, or, in other words, it is the synthesis of the consciousness and the will
(33). Here he is following the Hindu belief that—as Zimmer notes—the island is
to be seen as the area of metaphysical force where the forces of the ‘immense
illogic’ of the ocean are distilled (60). At the same time, the island is also a symbol
of isolation, of solitude, of death. Most island-deities have something funereal
about them—Calypso for instance. One could perhaps postulate an equation (of
counterpoise and identity) between island and woman on the one hand, and
monster and hero on the other.

If the answer is yes, it suggests that you may need time to yourself for restoration and renewal. The sea or the ocean generally symbolizes our unconscious. Thus, if you were very lonely or fearful of the waters around you, it may be an indication that you are unwilling to look deeply into yourself. All dwelling places generally represent the dreamer's psychological, emotional, or spiritual condition. The dream may reflect a current reality, issue, or dilemma and attempt to bring the dreamer into greater self-awareness. Because a hotel is a transitory dwelling, it suggests a time away from one's responsibilities or routine. As a dream symbol it could reflect a need for rest and reflection. Depending on the details of the dream, specific information can be ascertained. For example, if the hotel is luxurious it suggests prosperity and positive decision-making. However, if the hotel is rundown and inadequate, it may reflect a time of uneasiness and depravation. Whether the hotel in your dream represented a retreat or escapism is for you to determine by examining your current daily reality. Finally, a hotel may refer to a temporary stage in life or be a form of compensation with which the dreamer eases the anxiety and stress experienced during the day.

All things that flow and grow were regarded in early religions as a symbol
of life: fire represented the vital craving for nourishment, water was chosen for its
fertilizing powers, plants because of their verdure in spring-time. Now, all—or
very nearly all—symbols of life are also symbolic of death. Media vita in morte
sumus, observed the mediaeval monk, to which modern science has replied La vie
c’est la mort (Claude Bernard). Thus, fire is the destroyer, while water in its
various forms signifies dissolution, as suggested in the Psalms. In legend and
folklore, the Origin of life—or the source of the renewal of the life forces—takes
the form of caves and caverns where wondrous torrents and springs well up (38).
