Dungeons and Dropouts

This was a particularly photographic dream full of symbolic details, ripe for dissecting.
For a little background information, I am a college graduate, and during my teen years I lived with my mother and her husband.

***
I am in high school* and I am attending 2 important last days, upon both of which I am late. (Waking at 2 pm). On these special days in the dream, it is so important to attend on time, that your exit and entrance are filmed on camera. I am late on both days, and furthermore, on the first day, I am shown fumbling around and panicking, searching for something important as if I had lost it. [Interesting vivid visual of myself on camera, fast forwarded, in the 3rd person.]

I am searching inside a tiny room that is supposed to be my mother's and her husband's bedroom. (1)

On the second day, upon finding myself late again, I am filled with outrage and frustration, especially knowing that I am not attending high school "for real".* There is a news crew inside the school and I march over and complain about their camera policies, about how impossible it is to be on time for high school and take care of adult responsibilities, and finally an expose on something having to do with the school and their new "horse" program. Something agricultural. Some seedy plan that secretly involved barns filled with giant cheese wheels. Basically this new program is a load of "horseshit".**

Later on I am at home (I live in a big house with many roommates).
It is discovered that the roomie who lives on the first floor has been hiding an entrance to a dungeon in the house. A legit, medieval-style dark dungeon prison.** My roomies, my boyfriend, and I, descend into this place, which is definitely "safe", but still has a chilling aura of possibly malevolent spirits. Inside one "prison" room we discover wineglasses on a table, with candles inside. It has a very mysterious aura. There are also creepy prison beds and we make jokes that our roomie is getting down to some kinky stuff in this dungeon. (2) Before leaving both of us leave a magic card(3) as a half-joke offering to appease the spirits. My card is a tarot card featuring an elephant-god like Ganesha.** Boyfriend's card is a playing card, a high numbered card of a black suit. The cards fall down off the surface and I am spooked at displeasing the spirits, as we leave the dungeon.

(1)Their bed is of importance - in the dream, they have changed a too-small bed in favor of two antique twin beds pushed together, with a rather uncomfortable wooden bar in the middle. This is the bed my birth parents, and later I, have slept on in childhood.

(2) He really is the sort.

(3)Magic cards are a powerful force in both of our waking lives. I work with Tarot, while my partner has a magical-card system based on found playing cards. Both these systems carry heavy personal meaning and are a recurring dream symbol.

*recurring dream
**The medieval horse-and-dungeon themes are definitely fed in part by incessant video game playing at the house. Watching a documentary on cave paintings may have also played a part in all the animal representations.

Current life direction: feeling stagnant, loss of creativity, inconsistent routine, waking late

Interesting symbols: high school, CCTV, old bed, horses, dungeon, wineglasses with candles, ganesha tarot
