Sun Gazing

The sun is the kind mother
feeding direct energy.
It will burn you if you get too much,
kill you if you get too little.
In the middle is bliss.

I just talked to someone last night who hadn't heard of sun gazing, but told me all about how he used to stay up for many days at a time. He would look at the sun rise and sun set, always paying attention to the sun, and never really getting tired or hungry.

After asking around and reading many sun gazing websites, I've come up with a brief list of general guidelines that seem to be prudent if you also want to explore sun gazing.

Be very careful, sun can easily damage the eyes. Take it slow and listen to your eyes. Discontinue at any time if you feel it would be healthier to do so.

There are a set of sun gazing instructions put out by the HRM program, but to me they seem too extreme and unnatural. The below instructs incorporate many different first hand witness accounts I've listened to, and what worked for them.

1. Sun gaze only within an hour of sunrise and/or sunset, and only as much as is comfortable for your eyes. If your eyes get warm, uncomfortable, or sore, scale back your gazing.

2. Sungaze each day or sporadically, depending on what your body feels is best. Sun gazing each day seems to have somewhat of a spiritual effect on the psyche- people have reported developing a more personal relationship with the sun, and feeling more serene and fulfilled.

3. First Day: Look at the sunrise or sunset for 5-10 seconds.

4. Subsequent days: keep gazing at the sunset and sunrise, gradually increasing your time if that feels best to your eyes.

5. Consult an eye doctor periodically to make sure you're taking proper care of your eyes.

Effects:

People have recorded the following benefits of their sun gazing practice:

1. Absence of hunger- as though they were eating the sun's energy.

2. Reduced need for sleep

3. Increased peace and serenity

4. Greater spiritual understanding

5. Overall improvement in body, mind, and spirit function

Sounds great to me! I'm visiting Phoenix, AZ where the sun shines bright and nourishing every day. It seems to me that the sun provides direct energy that could be being utilized by humans just as much as I see it used by plants and animals.

I'll check back in as time goes on and let you know how my sun gazing practice is progressing. I would love to hear about anyone else's experiences.
