I've gone to the show of an old hometown friend; she's singing and playing the guitar while I watch sidestage. Next to me is an upright bass; I pick out a bassline and join in to accompany, but the thing is mistuned. I keep playing anyway, trying to pick out the right fingering with the instrument tuned incorrectly.
Then I'm in a huge complex of adjoining temples for a festival. All around me I see people of all faiths dressed in their fineries; I'm dressed for travel, simple pants, a sharp jacket, a backpack. The temple grounds are for filing through, performing ritual after ritual to god after god. I'm in the first room with a large Buddha-like statue, smiling serenely to his attendees. About a hundred people sit around the cavelike room. This diety also presides over tomatoes, and people have left gifts of them all over the room, all over the statues. The room is filled with a series of holy songs from all traditions, which somehow rise into a harmony.
As I leave, I run into an old friend from my hometown, another agnostic I know with a penchant for the spiritual. He's passing among the pilgrims, and I go to join him.
