I was skiing on a flat light day. heading down a line I had never tried before. there was a lot of blowing snow in the air. all of a sudden the chute started narrowing very quickly. I came in to an area that I couldn't see until i was right on top of it. a large band of rock and small cliffs. there was no way down with out taking a fifty to sixty foot air, and I couldn't see the landing. Also I knew I was going to need a lot more speed then I would be able to get to clear it. I felt a surge of panic. the sort of adrenaline that usually accompanies those situations. I remember opening my mouth to say something but nothing came out. I was completely exposed. There was one line that looked safe but for some reason it scared the shit out of me. I looked around in every direction and noticed a weather tower that had some sort of cable going from it into the trees below the cliffs. The next thing I knew I was scrambling to get to the top of the tower. once there I managed to get my skis back on. then using my poles I slid down the cable as if it were a zip line. I zipping along high over the cliffs and all feelings of fear had long gone. I knew I could let go and stomp into the powder below. so I released my poles and floated down into the softest white snow. safe and sound. skiing away.

In the Egyptian system of hieroglyphs, the tower is a determinative

spire into the sky, that my whole existence already seemed bound to be consumed
in climbing up and down it.’
