Stop and Smell the Flowers

My sister is drinking and driving, I'm in the backseat. The road is curvy, but her driving is staying steady so I'm not worrying about it.
The afternoon sky is beautiful. Perfect blue day. The sun is so bright.
It all feels good.

We pull into a town with narrow, cobbled roads. Open markets, and odd shops line the streets. Homes surround the town on hills. They seemed to have been standing there for at least a hundred years. Victorian style all different colors. Pinks, reds, blues, greens.

Hippies lined the sidewalks and flooded the markets. Momma's crying after their children, and teenage kids in packs of six or more hanging around park benches. My sister seems disgusted with the town, she's saying we just need to get cheap gas, and get going.
I am so... captivated, though.

I'm not sure how I lost my sister... but, I find myself wandering through the town. Enjoying the people, and the way the day felt. In the center of town, many people stood around a huge fountain.
Crystal clear water bubbled from the top, and pink, yellow, light green and purple flowers surrounded the fountain.
People were picking the flowers, smelling them and it seemed as if they were getting high from them... the contented faces after each whiff.

I stood by a girl, who had to be no more than fourteen. Her hair was platinum blonde, and her eyes were big. She plucked a pink flower next to her and breathed it in deeply. She rolled her eyes back and tilted her head. Chuckled, and then returned her eyes to me. Her smile was so pretty.
I exchanged a few words with her, but could not help to feel overwhelmed with curiosity.

I bent down to a small patch of yellow flowers, and reached for one to pluck. A mans hand dashed in front of mine though. I looked up, and a tall, dark brown dreaded man stood above me. He was handsome, speaking to me, but I couldn't listen. Wrapped up in his charm.
He repeated over, and over that I could not smell the flowers... it made me feel so confused.
I stared at him crossly.
He repeated over, and over that I could not smell the flowers... I still wonder why not.
