So this is more of an experience but I had a vivid waking vision during this amazing adventure.
I was in the jungles of Guatemala inside the ancient Mayan city of Tikal off the trail waiting for the sun to go down. At dusk the park would close and all the guards and tour guides would go home. Kim squeaked and grabbed my hand as we heard rustling in the nearby branches, I think it was just a monkey, the jungle starts to come alive at night. I couldn't believe we were really doing this, the guards were gone and no one knew we were missing! When we were sure the coast was clear we turned on our headlamps and got back on the trail, we hiked a 1/4 mile up the path until we got to the base of temple IV where we intended on spending the night.
Temple IV is the tallest temple-pyramid in Tekal, measuring 70 metres (230 ft) from the plaza floor level to the top of its roof comb. and is the largest pyramid built anywhere in the Maya region in the 8th century. It currently stands the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas.
My heart was racing with excitement as we climbed up the steep stairs, I could begin to feel in tune with this ancient structure. When I made contact with the stone I could feel energy emanating from this sacred place. I could only imagine the time and work the Mayans put in to build this marvelous wonder of the world. I truly believe that the emphasis of so many people worshiping hear has made this spiritual sanctuary a real energy vortex I could feel it!
As we ascended the temple we curved around it on modern stairs until they dropped us on a huge solid stone ledge, there we could see into the only entrance. This inner room was reserved for royalty, it was now sealed off with chain link fencing so no one could go inside. I couldn't help myself I felt drawn in by the energy so I squeezed behind the fence as I almost got stuck from the scaffolding pressing against my sternum it budged just enough to grant me access. I felt like Indiana Jones on a conquest as I steped into the musty, dark, dank room. There is no telling when the last mortal man had been in this sacred sanctum but it felt populated by powerful energies and echos of other times. The ceiling had intricate wood carvings, I didn't have to understand what they meant to know how special they were. I sat there in the center of the room cross legged and imagined all the spiritual ceremonies that took place here. The view was spectacular overlooking the canopy of the rain forest I could see the tops of distant temples poking out of the jungle, reflecting the moonlight. Oh marvelous me, for I am the ruler of all that I see. It felt lonely at the top as I gazed across the land at the vast Mayan empire. Then I peered upward and it instantly hit me that this monument wasn't built so high in order to militaristicly over see the ruling lands; but rather to connect with the heavens. I began to feel tingly and lightheaded and was no longer lonely...or alone. I heard a howler monkey in the far off jungle that brought me back to reality.
That would only be the precursor of how Kim and I would really 'connect' with the heavens on this night.
Upon emerging from the inside of the temple I saw Kim had discovered another forbidden area. Around the corner of the ledge there was a blocked off section with scaffolding and a latter that went up to the top part. Kim surprised me when she wanted to scale the temple after declining to sneak with me inside of it. I was only hesitant for half a second then I followed her up the latter. That one led to another latter, now I could see why no tourists were allowed here. I took the lead and went up one rickety latter at a time to make sure it was safe for us, the last section we were pretty much scaling the makeshift scaffolding itself. When we submitted, the fear went away and the wow factor overwhelmed us. Not even the Mayans themselves had a way to see this panoramic pinnacle of Mezzo America. We were high, in more ways than one. I think being at the apex of such a magnificent pyramid was filling us with energy from the base all angles pointed up at us. I felt so alive as I watched the tropical breeze whisk through Kim's hair. We laid back turned off our headlamps and stared up into the cosmos
oops ran out of time Ill be back -stay tuned... and stay tuned
