Digging the teacher

Morning of September 8, 1981. Tuesday.

I am in high school in Florida again (while presently living in Wisconsin). It is one of my tenth grade classes (the year I did not complete) with a female teacher. In my dream however, I do not recognize any of the other students. The classroom is oriented to the east, the main entrance ahead and to my left.

As the young female teacher is speaking, the class is not paying much attention. I do not feel fully in my dream near the last scene, although there does seem to be more energy at this point. I feel a bit bad that the teacher is not getting her point across. I believe it is something from history related to Napoleon or the French Revolution.

In the next row to my left, and about two seats ahead, is a tall unusual-looking student who reminds me just a little of the RanXerox character (which is also the in-dream impression I get) and he seems to dominate my dream as the main character even over my own essence. After a time, he makes a strange repeating motion with his hands. He holds them out in front of his chest and over his desk and makes a sort of motion that seems to imply “digging through the air”, much like the mimicking of peddling an upturned bicycle with one’s hands. He looks back at the class as if to confirm it as an “insult” of some kind, seeming to imply that the teacher is not important regarding what she is saying.

There is actually a fair amount of layering here. In the first place, my father had created a “trick” bicycle in the late 70s (something he was well-known for second only to his lifelong radio and musical career) that is additionally pedaled with the hands rather than having solely handlebars in the front. The RanXerox character also reminded me of a coworker at the time (though was seen as a fictional classmate in-dream).

Unfortunately, the word “dig” has opposite and highly ambiguous associations as many words do. It can mean both something very positive (as in “I really dig this teacher”) or very negative (as a “dig” being a sarcastic, taunting remark). The hand movement also relates loosely to a “revolution” (French Revolution) and possibly Waterloo as in defeat.

All in all though, it seemed to be an impersonal viewing and validation of the lack of focus of everyman or people who always seemed distracted by their own thoughts over that of a public speaker; in other words, the ego.

This dream is also more “timely” (in a subliminally correct sense) and of an anniversary type in that it would be the first day of school for me had I been of school age and the general dates being the same relative to summer vacation and school return (usually, when I was in school, the day after Labor Day). This is something I think a lot of people never notice about their own dreams, although it is not a major element.
