Forbidden Land

Afternoon of January 7, 1973. Sunday.

Aspects of this dream were recurring over a shorter time period (about two weeks) and there were "sequels" later on. The actual first version was at age twelve. My dream seemed to take place in the cow pasture area at our Cubitis home, beyond the railroad tracks behind my house, to the east. I was with my best friend Toby T and a few other people, including about two or three girls (at least Brenda W and Tina L were there) and I think Steve W and Sharla M. We had started out near the railroad tracks, but they were all bent and seemingly pulled high into the air, the unconnected parts bent up taller than houses. We reach an older-looking wooden sign that reads "Forbidden Land" in red paint. I should add here that looking up at the bent and twisted tracks created a slight dizzying sensation and reminded me somewhat of an unfeasible ladder.

Eventually, we are in a small, isolated town, very similar to the overall look of the main part of the "Gunsmoke" television series set, but a little more modern. We are inside a restaurant and there is a great noise outside, like a sort of amplified galloping. We notice plaster falling from the ceiling as whatever it is passes by, down the street, which is mostly just ground (there are not many cars - but most are from the early 1960s).

It turns out that a giant horse lives near the town and sometimes causes damage to buildings (but is not a threat to people if they get out of the way). The giant horse had also been what damaged (and seemed to "curl up") the railroad tracks when galloping over part of them. There is a legend about this giant animal that is said to be "a hundred hands high" (which it probably is). We decide to find out more about this unusual mystery and talk to a few people about the town and their own experiences. Later on, we are on a steeper hill and I see that the mother horse has finally found her colt and is no longer a threat to the town. They move on to a land far away. I see them standing near a large lake (from my view high overhead), which is more like a small pond to them.

My dream takes on a very peaceful, positive tone; I feel very happy upon waking. It held a very similar mood to the mother bear and cub dream of years prior - same theme - a seeming threat by an animal, which changes into happiness at the end through finding the offspring. A main aspect of this dream seems very vaguely inspired by the "Arizona Midnight" episode of the "Gunsmoke" television series, with the very large horse rode by the midget, seen the prior Monday (on January 1st). As an added note, I also had this dream while sleeping on my father's other bed in his room/studio. Coincidentally, my oldest son was born on this date in 1995, exactly twenty-two years later.
