If At First You Don't Succeed...

A major disaster hits, there are a series of tasks, challenges and puzzles to figure out. Some are simple, others are very intense, and a few are fantastically magical. With friends and family all around, who will take what tasks? What strategies can we use to ensure the most people survive the crisis? What will it take to do that?

All night, I found myself engaging in this scenario, over and over again. We were always in a large auditorium building with many halls, secret corridors, VIP areas, bathrooms, offices, etc, similar to a Civic Center. Many of our friends and family were there, as well as famous performers visiting. There were security guards, and lots of people, all over the complex.

In each cycle, a major disaster would hit, and people would go crazy. Security guards would use weapons to stop people from getting access to certain areas, the mass populace was going mad with panic, halls and rooms were changing as the building was being shifted and torn. I remember countless bits of these scenarios, but mostly we were strategically trying to find specific tools, magical materials, and access to get out from the building through a network of secret underground tunnels. Each time, we failed in some way to achieve all of our objectives, and so the dream would start over again...

The final cycle I remember with vivid clarity. I'm suddenly aware of myself in the auditorium, and I know what is coming. I run through the halls, and dart straight towards the stairwell to the VIP area. As I approach, I pick up a shard of mirror that had broken and was being cleaned up on the ground, and before the security guard can stop me, I drive it into his belly and slit him open up the chest.

Without stopping, I sprint up the stairs as shouts arise behind me. I have no time to stop or consider, I've tried every other way, and I know this is the key, and that security guard killed many of us in previous rounds...

At the top of the stairs, I enter what looks like a child's bedroom, though there are performers in costume lounging around in it. They look at me in surprise as I run into the room, closing and locking it behind me. Wordless, they stare as I run over to the corner of the room, throwing children's books aside and opening a wooden chest.

I pull out what looks like an old paper menu from the chest, which reads: "The Recipe Book of Dr. Seuss." Glancing inside the folded paper, I see that it has exactly what I was looking for...all sorts of recipes. Not for food, however... For Magic.

I knew that this is what we needed to survive.

I heard the music crescendo in the ampitheatre below, and I knew it was time. I shouted to the performers in the little room, "HOLD ON! GRAB ON TO SOMETHING NOW!!!" They looked at me with blank and confused expressions, so I jumped on the bed and grabbed the frame.

Suddenly, everything shook in a jaw-breaking shudder, and I felt wind whip around my body. Looking up, I saw that the walls and ceiling were gone. The performers were screaming, some flying up into the air. A storm whipped through the city around me, windows of skyscrapers being ripped free, and I clutched the bed frame, holding on for life, though with an inner sense of total calm as I looked into the recipe book...

Then I woke up...
